TP-78-V: Employment expenses of forestry workers in Québec

If you’re a salaried forestry worker and your employment contract required you to buy equipment like a chain-saw, brush-cutter, a snowmobile, an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV), or a motor vehicle, you might be able to claim a deduction using form TP-78-V: Employment expenses of forestry workers in Québec.
The eligible expenses you can claim also include the costs of operating and maintaining your equipment (including fuel, repairs, insurance premiums, and rental costs). For a more complete list of eligible expenses, check out Revenu Québec’s Employment Expenses Guide.
A few more things to note:
- The TP-78-V form is combined with the federal T777, TP-59-V, and other related forms in H&R Block’s tax software.
- You can’t claim a deduction for these costs if your employer has already reimbursed you.
- If you deduct the cost of your tools from your income, you might be able to claim a Québec sales tax (QST) rebate.
Follow these steps in H&R Block’s 2020 tax software:
Before you begin, make sure you told us that you lived in Québec on December 31, 2020.
- Under the PREPARE tab, click the IN THIS SECTION icon.
- Under Employment Expenses box, click the Add This Topic button.
- Click the EMPLOYMENT icon. You'll find yourself here:
- Under the EXPENSES heading, select the checkbox labelled Employment expenses, then click Continue.
- When you arrive at the Employment expenses page, select Forestry worker in response to the question, What type of employment did you have in 2020?.
- Select Forestry worker from the Go To Page dropdown menu, then click Continue.
- Enter your information into the tax software.
