Yukon Government Carbon Price Rebate
New this year, individuals and businesses can claim the Yukon Government Carbon Price Rebate on their return to help offset the cost of the federal carbon pollution pricing levy. Here’s what you need to know:
The basic rebate amount is calculated based on the information you enter on your return and will be paid to you quarterly starting July 2020. The rebate amount is the same for all Yukon residents regardless of age, income, or marital status. However, if you lived outside Whitehorse on December 31, 2020, you might be able to claim an additional 10% remote supplement.
Note: To make sure you receive your rebate payments on time, you and your spouse or common-law partner (if applicable) must file your return by April 30, 2021.
To claim the business portion of the rebate, you’ll need to complete the Schedule YT (S14): Yukon Business Carbon Price Rebate form. You can claim this rebate if you:
- Operated a business in the Yukon or earned rental income from a property in Yukon, while you were a Yukon resident
- Had business assets that burned fossil fuels (other than diesel)
- Did not and will not receive a carbon tax rebate for 2020 for certain mining businesses
The rebate amount is based on the undepreciated capital cost (UCC) of the assets used in your business in 2020. You’ll need to enter amounts from the capital cost allowance (CCA) schedule you used to calculate your business income to complete this form.
An eligible asset is property that meets all these conditions:
- It is depreciable property that you owned on December 31, 2020, and is included in one of the following eligible classes:
- Category 1: Buildings
- Category 2: Equipment that burns fossil fuel
- Category 3: “Green” assets that are designed to consume non-fossil fuels
- In 2020, you used it mainly to carry on a business in Yukon
- It was situated in Yukon at all (or substantially all) times in 2020, unless it was cross-border transport equipment
Note: Cross-border transport equipment is an eligible Yukon asset if you used it in 2020 mainly to transport passengers or goods between a place in Yukon and a place outside Yukon or you elected to treat it as cross-border transport equipment.
